How does the license system work?
Our organization is accredited as a national provider by the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation. If you would like to offer the Award program at your educational institution, you can be licensed by us as a program provider.
You arrange a preliminary meeting with us. We will introduce you to the Award program, point out our criteria for Award providers and clarify any open questions.
You sign the license agreement (digitally by e-mail or by post). Award providers commit themselves to provide the necessary legal, administrative and personnel framework to ensure that the promise to young people “You can do more than you think!” is kept. To make your participation visible, you will receive a license plate.
The new Duke Award team takes part in the program training (min. 2 people). If you would like to offer the Gold level, at least one Award Leader must take part in the training course for assessors in wilderness areas.
Now you can start implementing the Duke Award!
What are the costs?
The minimum contributions associated with licensing ensure the sustainability of our offer independent of donations and funding. In order to offer the Award, you should therefore plan financial resources for the annual license fee, the Award Leader training and the participation fee for young people. These vary depending on the type of organization.
We welcome higher contributions from individual educational institutions on a voluntary basis to support our work with schools in challenging circumstances. Public organizations and participants who have difficulty raising the contributions can apply informally for funding from our supporters.
Expeditions can be carried out in close proximity and without professional equipment at low cost. Alternatively, you can borrow materials already purchased from our association in Berlin or from other program providers. Over time, however, some educational institutions decide to purchase expedition materials themselves. Here you will find a recommendation for materials including a cost calculation:

How is the billing carried out?
The licence fee is charged immediately after registration and the license plate is sent out without delay. The course fee will be invoiced after completion of the course. On 15 May and 15 November, educational institutions will receive an invoice for their Award participants based on the ORB registration data. Participants who have registered and decided to discontinue the program have to pay the full participation fee.
If an educational institution cancels its participation, the license plate must be returned.
How will we continue to be supported?
An important part of our work is the supervision of our Award providers and the verification of compliance with the program standards so that all participants receive challenging and unique experiences with the Award.
Our quality management consists of the following aspects:
- Annual feedback calls: together we put the programme concept to the test and develop it further.
- Voluntary webinars: We offer webinars at regular intervals to refresh existing knowledge and impart new information.
- National network meeting for knowledge sharing: We meet annually to learn from each other and network.
- Award verification: Before an Award is handed out, we check it individually, and only approved if it fulfills all the criteria. If anything is unclear, we seek a personal dialogue with the Award Leader.
